Irish Proverbs

The site wouldn’t be complete without a section on Irish proverbs. In true Irish form, the proverbs are lovely little reminders of how to live a good, respectable, healthy life. Most cultures have little phrases they have memorized since childhood to remind them of things. For example, to remind one of weather patterns, a person may recite, “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning.” This little rhymning phrase has been repeated for generations to predict weather. The Irish have these phrases, only they are usually warnings about how to live or how not to live one’s life. They are amusing and the sheer amount of Irish proverbs in circulation is astounding. We’ve included some here and as always, encourage our readers to share ones with us we may have missed.
