There is so much to like about Irish dance– from the deep connection to Irish culture, to the mesmerizing footwork and the childhood memories it brings up for so many of Irish descent. In recent years the traditional Irish dance style has been transformed into incredible works of modern art. A new video by the Fusion Fighters is among those unique videos.

“Fusion Orchestra 2” takes Irish dance to another level. At first glance it almost appears that the dancers are on top of mats from the Dance Dance Revolution game, with boxes lighting up in conjunction with some of the steps. It perfectly portrays the type of dance that the Fusion Fighters seek to create.

In their original “Fusion Orchestra” video, the group aimed “to show off the individual styles the 5 performers had to offer, while still anchoring the piece with our unique Irish fusion choreography (Irish, Tap, Body Percussion). Also to challenge the way we present our performance by thinking of new ways to include technology. The result was five custom made performance platforms and the use of studio beats, sound effects & lights that are triggered through responsive pads on the platforms & costumes.” These second installment maintains those efforts, while increasing the amount of and interaction with technology.

“Fusion Orchestra 2” features music by Brian McGrane Music, and was choreographed and produced by Chris Naish. Brian McGrane also served as a producer.

We especially love seeing all of the different ways Irish dance has grown over the years. From Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance driving the popularity of the style into international acclaim, to groups that take risks in creating powerful, eye-catching, and soulful performances. With the addition of technology and using various dance styles mixed with traditional moves, new life has been breathed into Irish dance, and hopefully generations to come will be eager to learn.
