Celtic Symbolism…

Celtic symbolism is a focal point in all of our pendant designs; to help you learn about the symbols found on our jewelry, we’ve compiled some fascinating information about the deeper meanings “hidden” in the pieces shown above:

Celtic Crosses – Celtic Crosses are found in the churchyards of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and they are often used to mark the resting places of those who have passed on. However, these beautiful crosses, which often feature a distinctive central ring, are also used as spiritual motifs on Celtic metal work, stained glass, and illuminated manuscripts.

The ringed and High crosses of the British Isles began to appear in the Early Medieval Period, and they remain a powerful symbol of Christian faith. Each branch of the Celtic Cross represents the four directions, and the central ring is believed to symbolize a halo.

Some believe that the ring of every Celtic Cross is a symbol that evolved from Pagan Sun Worship.

The delicate interlace designs that often decorate the branches of Celtic Crosses are another important design element in ancient Celtic art. Knot work, or interlace, patterns are used to symbolize eternity.

St. Bridget’s Cross (second from left in the table shown above) – St. Bridget, an Irish saint of great renown, devoted her life to caring for the sick and destitute. In her compassion and devotion to service of her fellow man, St. Bridget put into action the purest values of her Christian faith.

This famous nun created the first St. Bridget’s Cross when she used palm rushes (these were strewn upon the floor of a simple Irish cottage) to weave a cross that she made to comfort a dying man.

Today, every St. Bridget’s Cross motif remains a poignant, and uniquely Irish, reminder of faith, compassion, and love…

Shamrock – The shamrock of Ireland really needs no introduction, as it is such a well-known symbol of the Emerald Isle and its people. However, many people don’t know what an Irish shamrock really means.

The first “Irish” shamrock was made famous by Saint Patrick; he used the three-leaf plant to symbolize the Holy Trinity. According to Ireland’s patron saint, each leaf of the tender green plant illustrated Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
