The Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival

Every year in September, tens of thousands of people visit a small Irish town to search for their soul mates at the famed Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival.

This annual, month-long (Sept. 2nd – Oct. 3rd) get-together is actually the biggest festival of its kind in all of Europe.

Against the picturesque backdrop of this County Clare spa town (known since the 18th century for its healing, mineral-rich waters), men and women congregate to find true love at this huge annual singles event.

This tiny village is usually home to less than a thousand residents – however, the matchmaking festival changes everything, as more than 25,000 singles flood into the town to attend fun matchmaking activities and events at local watering holes and restaurants.

Love On The Rocks?

Located close to the stunning and dramatic natural rock formation known as the Burren, Lisdoonvarna is now also world-renowned for triggering thousands of hot new romances…and more than a few lasting unions…

The Matchmaker Ireland festival offers myriad ways to get closer to other eligible bachelors and bachelorettes, while also enjoying the beauty and culture of the Emerald Isle.

For example, festival-goers may visit The Matchmaker Bar to be added to the “books” of Lisdoonvarna’s own “Cupid” (and the festival’s official matchmaker), Willie Daly.

Singles frolic at events all over the town, including outings at the Burren Castle Hotel, the Irish Arms Pub, and the Q Dance Club (among many other local venues). Dances run from noon ’til night every day of this convivial gathering, offering singles a perfect way to mingle with wonderful music and refreshments.

Of course, not everyone who comes to Lisdoonvarna leaves with a partner – in fact, this festival is just considered a fun party by many singletons…

High Hopes…

The YouTube video posted below shows a few happy singles enjoying the celebration and talking about their experiences at the Matchmaking Festival in Lisdoonvarna.

Europe’s Biggest Blind Date?

“Mother, I do not need a blind date. Particularly not with some verbally incontinent spinster who smokes like a chimney, drinks like a fish and dresses like her mother. ~Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones’ Diary”

For the Bridget Jones generation, whose “singletons” bemoan the modern condition of serial monogamy, a festival such as this one may prove to be an amusing diversion at best, but one that is tinged with hope; after all, there are touching love stories to be found that have their roots within the town limits of Lisdoonvarna, Ireland.

If you’re not afraid of the biggest blind date in Europe – and you’ve got the cash to fund a six-week stay in this Irish hamlet (be sure to book your accommodations well in advance) – you may well find some interesting romantic prospects. The latest celebrity to visit the festival was the controversial Irish songstress, Sinead O’Connor.
