Deciphering The Celtic Spiral…

The first Celtic spirals appeared on the Irish passage tomb at Newgrange, and these motifs were probably inspired by patterns in nature.

The gentle curves of a seashell resemble the Celtic spiral structure, and so do the spiral galaxies found in outer space…

It’s entirely possible that the ancient Celts showed their reverance for nature and the Creator by using this meaningful design, which is believed to represent growth and life-force…

The use of Celtic spirals on ancient burial stones and burial mounds indicates their importance as a spiritual symbol of life, death and rebirth…

Understanding Celtic Knot Work…

The latticework style known as Celtic knot work (or Celtic interlace) emerged during the Insular Art period in the sixth century. Artisans, such as Irish monks, used this hypnotic style to represent themes of eternity and spirituality.

Since the lines of traditional Celtic knot work flow through one another, they symbolize the interconnectedness of all things.

In many cases, knot work was used to add visual impact to borders (such as borders on the pages of the Irish Book of Kells), or on insets carved into the surface of stone Celtic crosses (as shown at left).

While these patterns could be found in pre-Christian times, the most common usages of interlace in Ireland, Scotland and Wales were almost always linked with expressions of Christian devotion.

The Byzantine and Roman roots of these mysterious patterns can be traced back to the fourth century; however, traditional Celtic knot work became prevalent in the British Isles two hundred years later, during the early medieval period.
