Richard Joyce, an Irish fisherman who hailed from Galway, was sailing near Montserrat when his ship was overtaken by pirates.

He was kidnapped and forced to work in the shop of a Moorish goldsmith. For years, he longed for the woman he left behind; her name was Margaret.

In her honor, he crafted what would become known as the very first Claddagh Ring.

In 1689, Joyce finally won his freedom. King William III lobbied for the release of all slaves, and his negotiations with their captors was successful.

Joyce returned to his one true love, who had waited faithfully for him through all the years of his slavery.

Doing your eyes: This is the fun part. You’ll want to make your eyes glow with an application of dark-green eyeliner that flatters any color of eye. How much eyeliner you use should really depend on your image.

If you’re used to strong makeup looks, then line your upper and lower lashes in a strong, sexy green, like MAC Eye Kohl in Minted. Apply black mascara, and groom your brows if necessary.

For a more subtle effect, use a very thin line of green only on the top lashes, very near the lashline. Smudge it gently with a sponge or stiff brush to soften the line, and limit mascara to the top lashes. This classic look is a safe choice that allows you to play with vibrant color in an elegant way. If you want a sexier look, extend the line a little, for a cat-eye effect.

For more impact, apply a pearly highlighter under the brow bone, but beware, as this can really magnify flaws if you’re a bit older. It’s fine to skip this step if you want to.
