After all…
They do not love that do not show their love…
- William Shakespeare
Saint Valentine Believed in Love…
Known as the patron saint of couples, St. Valentine was of Roman descent, and he spent his life working as a priest; in time, this romantic and self-sacrificing saint become a Martyr, due to his good deeds aiding oppressed Christians during the third century.
During an ancient Roman festival of pagan origin (the Lupercalia), men and women would pay homage to Saint Valentine through special romantic rituals.
For example, a man would select a piece of paper from a box filled with notes; whichever woman’s name was on his piece of paper would celebrate the festival as his new partner…
The Christian Church, which plainly disapproved of such pagan debauchery, made their own “game”, where every believer would select one of the Saint’s names from a wooden box, and then try to emulate that saint’s spirit and achievements during the Valentine period…
In the medieval age, Feb. 14th officially became a day for romantic couples… sending Valentines to sweethearts was soon customary; according to legend, St. Valentine helped to united star-crossed lovers by passing notes from one to the other, and thereby defying Roman authorities.
In fact, even while being imprisoned for his good deeds, St. Valentine reputedly continued to collect notes from his visitors, so he could then pass them on to their pining partners…
Saint Valentine’s Remains Rest in Ireland…
While little historical evidence of this romantic figure actually exists, it’s safe to say that there is some important connection between the lauded Saint and the spirit of true love; today, Saint Valentine’s remains may be found at Whitefriar Street Church, Dublin.
Those who make pilgrimages to be close to this Saint’s remains often do so on St. Valentine’s Day; couples frequently travel to Whitefriar Street Church to view the beautiful statue of St. Valentine that is prominently displayed…and to “bless” their love in the presence of his earthly remains.
Those who seek divine assistance for their romantic problems also go to the church to pray for help from this famous saint and martyr…
The doomed patron saint of lovers was tortured and then executed under instructions from the Roman Emperor, Claudius II Gothicus; he died on February 14th.
The tender sentiments of the Bard would surely win the approval of the late Saint Valentine….and they will make a fine choice for any Valentine card sent in his honor…
My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee, the more I have, for both are infinite.
- William Shakespeare

As a symbol of Celtic ancestry, our Trinity Knot design is second to none…
Hidden Meaning…
For thousands of years, the Trinity Knot has been revered as one of the Celtic people’s most meaningful symbols.
This motif has hidden meaning and poignant symbolism; comprised of three equal and interlocking shapes, each Trinity Knot represents the Holy Trinity.
The segments of every Trinity Knot symbolize Father, Son and Holy Spirit…for women of faith, Trinity Knot jewelry is a beautiful expression of their own beliefs..
This ancient symbol appears on stained glass masterworks, ancient manuscripts (including the Book of Kells), and the beautiful gilt-and-bronze jewelry of the Middle Ages…
The Trinity Knot in Modern Culture…
The longevity of this ancient symbol, which can be traced back to the Early Medieval Period, is underscored by its appearance in modern culture.
This spiritual motif has been showcased in the film Constantine (starring Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz); this supernatural thriller features a Trinity Knot pendant that gives its wearer divine protection against ultimate evil…
The Trinity Knot, which is also known as the Triquetra, was also featured on the popular TV program, Charmed, starring Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan.
This symbol (along with a ring motif) was used on the cover of a special Charmed manual known as the Book of Shadows…this book of witchcraft spells was a very important focal point during many episodes of the show.
Here is a fan video showing Alyssa Milano’s character,Phoebe Halliwell, as she discovers the Book of Shadows for the very first time…be sure to look for the Trinity Knot…
Today, plenty of replicas of this special leather-bound tome are found online, and each one features a golden Trinity Knot embellished with a simple circle…
The connection between the Trinity Knot and modern Wicca rituals may be traced back to the Pagans; in this day and age, many neo-Pagans (also known as Wiccans) have adopted the Trinity Knot for use in their own rituals (although it is more commonly viewed as a Christian symbol).
It’s important to note that Wicca is not about “black magic”; instead, it is centered on traditional Pagan themes, such as love of nature and the equal worship of a male and female God.
Wicca is a modern religion that is quite similar to ancient Celtic Paganism…
Choose A Symbolic Design for Valentine’s Day
If you don’t have a special valentine sweetheart this year, why not be your own valentine?

Famous Irishmen – William Butler Yeats
Posted on | January 4, 2012 | by Ciara O'Brien | No Comments
One of the Emerald Isle’s most glorious poets, the late William Butler Yeats (b. 1865) began his life in Sandymount, Ireland.
This County Dublin native grew up in a time dominated by religious and political change, and his character was shaped by the events that swirled around him as a child.
Yeats parents were prominent descendants of the Protestant Ascendancy movement, whose message and legacy was gradually being diluted by new leadership and a changing Ireland.
The renewed popularity of the Catholic faith, as well as rising nationalism in the Emerald Isle, all triggered the waning power of this formerly-powerful group of Protestants – these cultural shifts influenced Yeats (and his work) as he reached maturity. …continue reading Famous Irishmen – William Butler Yeats
Celtic Mythology – The Beltane Festival
Posted on | December 30, 2011 | by Ciara O'Brien | No Comments
In the depths of winter or rainy spring, many of us dream of summer flowers and warm, comforting sunshine…in medieval Ireland, those who endured months filled with bitter, icy rains, frigid winds, and myriad hardships went on to celebrate the decidedly gentler summer season during the traditional Beltane Festival, which was held on the first day of May…
Beltane celebrations (which were also held in Scotland and Wales) were a positive affirmation of life, love, sunshine and nature’s bounty. Designed to uplift and inspire, each May Day festival featured spirited dances around a festive Maypole, such as the beribboned pole shown above.
May Day fests with certain similarities to Celtic Beltane festivals were also well-known in non-Celtic lands, such as Germany, Sweden and England…
Today, Maypoles are still used in spring festivals, mostly in Europe – these festooned posts are believed to be Pagan monuments that are symbolic of male virility…in fact, these poles and their connections to Pagan fertility rituals often presented a problem for religious authorities in the Middle Ages - these leaders generally preferred to eradicate all traces of the “old religion” from their communities.
However, the continued presence of Maypoles indicates that remnants of the old ways are still valued in today’s society…
Banning of Beltane-inspired Maypoles was often done due to fears of “indecency” that dancing around the poles might trigger…these links between expressions of physical passion, fertility, and Maypole dancing have their roots in the rich and colorful history of the Gaelic Beltane festival…
History of Beltane
The Gaelic Beltane festival began on the eve of May Day, and it was a wild and uninhibited celebration of a new season – and of the sacred “marriage” between God and Goddess.
According to Beltane lore, the Great God (also known as the Great Stag) and the Goddess would be represented by couples who laid together out in the fields – in fact, even those who were long wed were allowed to seek out new partners in the woods on this special night.
The rules that governed society were loosened on May Day Eve, when Beltane fires blazed (possibly in honor of the ancient Celtic Sun God, Lugh) and the veil between the worlds seemed to lift…
This festival celebrated summer fertility – as the buds blossomed and the weather became more pleasing, the villagers were surrounded by evidence of fertility in nature, and they echoed it in their own acts. A Queen of the May would be elected and she would bestow blessings to the townspeople. However, these Pagan rituals, which obviously had a sexual component, were eventually frowned upon by Church elders, as Ireland increasingly became converted to Christianity.
Nonetheless, many Gaelic country folk clung to their Beltane celebrations for as long as they possibly could…
Other rituals that happened at Beltane festivals included the blessing of animals, which were walked through two sacred fires – the kindling used for these bonfires was specially selected for its magical or symbolic properties. Woods were collected from a variety of trees, and Celtic symbols were often engraved on the branches before they were burned.
Mystical, yet earthy, Beltane festivals were quite a heady blend of reality and fantasy, and therefore, eagerly awaited by rural people, who longed for the touch of Beltane wildness that was so different from the mundane and everyday lives that they led…
Young couples who came together on Beltane often danced around a village Maypole the next morning…
Celebrate Thousands of Years of Celtic Culture…
The ancient symbols that are painstakingly etched into the surface of our Ladies Two Tone Celtic Spiral Wedding Band evoke centuries of Celtic mysticism, lore, and history.
Crafted by hand in the Emerald Isle, this unique and exquisite wedding band symbolizes life-force and eternity – much like the Beltane fires, Maypoles, and rituals of yesteryear, the power of these ancient spirals is an integral part of Irish, Scottish and Welsh culture…
Celebrate the spirituality of your ancestors by choosing a Celtic wedding ring that you will treasure for a lifetime. Each ring we offer is stamped in the Assay Office of Dublin Castle.
Exploring Cobh, Ireland
Posted on | December 21, 2011 | by Ciara O'Brien | 2 Comments
Located in County Cork, Ireland, the scenic seaside town of Cobh (pronounced, “cove”) is well-known for its charming, colorful row-houses, as well as its famous statue of Irish immigrant Annie Moore (and her two brothers).
Ms. Moore was the first person to be processed at Ellis Island, and she arrived there after an arduous journey on the S.S. Nevada. Moore boarded this ship at Cobh (which was then named Queenstown), and she disembarked in America eleven days later.
Today, visitors to Cobh admire an artful stone homage to Moore and her brothers – their expressions seem to illustrate a mixture of trepidation, anticipation, and hope…
During the Great Famine, many Irish men, women and children departed from this coastal hub en route to historic Ellis Island, USA…one can only imagine the powerful emotions that they experienced as they prepared to face the unknown in a new continent…
This Irish seaport is also infamous as the last port of call of the H.M.S. Titanic, and it figures prominently in the history of another doomed vessel – the Lusitania…
The rich legacy of Cobh makes it a fascinating and meaningful tourist destination for visitors from all over the globe; here are some interesting things to see and do in this Emerald Isle locale…
Things to See and Do in Cobh, Ireland
Cobh Heritage Centre is a great place to begin exploring the history of this scenic Irish town.
In particular, this heritage centre focuses on the plight of Irish immigrants, who travelled to Canada and America to avoid the hardships of poverty, failed crops, and contagions…
From 1848 to the early 1950′s, more than two million Irish people left their homelands via Cobh’s harbour – all in all, six million Emerald Isle natives chose to leave their birthplace in order to build a better life in North America.
The sacrifices and achievements of these Irish people are documented in a series of poignant and educational exhibits.
This heritage center is the home of the Annie Moore statue shown at left – just outside the centre’s main entrance, Annie and her brothers are captured at a pivotal moment in Irish history.
No trip to Cobh is complete without a visit to this museum, which also features plenty of important information about Cobh’s maritime history (including facts about Cobh’s connection to the Titanic and the Lusitania).
The Titanic Trail
This popular walking tour of Cobh allows tourists to experience history in a more immediate way.
During this hour-long expedition, Cobh’s unique architecture, streets, and harbour areas become backdrops for factual and historical storytelling from highly-knowledgeable guides.
The Titanic Trail was devised by a renowned local historian, Michael Martin (PhD), who linked the vistas and locales of Cobh with the legendary vessel’s history…
For those who are intrigued by the Titanic’s tragic end and the steps leading up to its fateful sinking, the Titanic Trail walking tour provides a diverting way to learn more about the ship’s many connections to Ireland.
Old Church Cemetery
This ancient burial ground is the final resting place for 193 of the Lusitania’s crew members – this infamous ship was sunk by a German torpedo in spring of 1915.
This cemetery also features the graves of other notable historical figures, including an Antarctic explorer, Napoleon’s personal doctor, and pugilist/show business performer Jack Doyle.
